Nas to perform at Amy Winehouse birthday memorial

Dec 11 2012, 5:28am CST | by

Nas is to perform at a special concert commemorating Amy Winehouse's 30th birthday, Mitch Winehouse has revealed.

The rapper - who duetted with the late singer on his track 'Cherry Wine' - is to take to the stage at the event, which is being held next September at The Roundhouse in Camden, north London, to raise money for The Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Mitch says Nas will be joined on the bill by a host of other big name artists and he is hoping that a statue of his daughter Amy will be ready to be unveiled at the venue on the same evening.

Speaking at the Spirit of London Awards at The O2 in London on Monday night (10.12.12), he told BANG Showbiz: "From the start of next year we're building up to Amy's birthday on September 14. We're going to be holding a concert at The Roundhouse and we're working on the line-up of performers now. Nas is definitely going to be performing because he wants to do as much as he can for the Foundation. It's going to be a fantastic night, and will be a great tribute to her. And if it's ready we're going to be unveiling Amy's statue."

Mitch insists 2013 will be a busy year for the Foundation as in March the organization will be hosting the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards and Gala at which Tony Bennett and Nas will be honored for their music and for helping to "inspire greatness in others".

He added: "We've got a lot going on next year. In March we've got the gala dinner in New York, at which we're honoring Tony Bennett and Nas and Salaam Remi. Jennifer Hudson is going to be performing, Nas is going to be performing, it's going to be great."

The Spirit of London Awards recognizes outstanding work by young people in local communities in the UK capital.

First Listen: Sean Rowe, 'Madman'

Aug 31 2014 10:03pm CDT | Source: WNYC Music

Sean Rowe has been playing a haunted cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The River" on tour this year, usually using only his battered Takamine acoustic guitar, a harmonica and his well-deep, Old Testament baritone voice. It might give an impression — abetted by his impressive beard — that Rowe, a small-town upstate New Yorker, is some Dust Bowl folkie throwback. But his albums paint a ri ...

The Other Rock History

Aug 30 2014 5:48pm CDT | Source: WNYC Music

The new book The History of Rock N Roll in Ten Songs is missing everything you would expect. No Rolling Stones or Beatles. No Jimi Hendrix performances or remembrances of Woodstock. In place of the iconic, musicologist Greil Marcus analyzes 10 songs that he says tell the wild story of one of America's greatest gifts to the world. No. 1 is "Shake Some Action" by the The Flamin' Groovies — wh ...

Report: Public Enemy - Live At Metropolis Studios, London

Aug 7 2014 4:33am CDT | Source: Clash Music

Hip hop icons play intimate show...A recording studio in leafy Chiswick isn't exactly the most immediate location for a Public Enemy show. In the end, though, Public Enemy treated this at they would any other gig - they simply went to town. Parading in front of the crowd, Chuck D purred: "y ...

Aug 6 2014 11:50am CDT | Source: WNYC Music

For this installment of the DJ Sessions, KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez shares his picks, including one artist that reminded Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson of the R&B group Color Me Badd, popular in the ’90s — and still popular with Anthony Valadez. The playlist includes Canadian producer and performer duo Majid Jordan, laid back and psyched-out soulman Nick Hakim, two-piece soul group Silk Rhodes, Amy Winehouse protege Liam Bailey and, of course, ’90s R&B group Co ...
