Angelina Jolie Offends the Chinese like her Husband Brad

Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie recently ended up offending the Chinese people like her husband Brad Pitt did years ago.

Angelina Jolie has said something which seems to have made her persona non grata in the People’s Republic of China. Her hubby made it into their hate list years ago by starring in a movie about Tibet. Now it seems it is Angie’s turn to turn off the Chinese

In a recent interview in Shanghai, she managed to blurt out a little too much for the tastes of the people who live behind the Bamboo Curtain. She was there to drum up support for her film “Maleficient”. When she was questioned as to her favorite Chinese director, Miss Jolie responded by saying that Ang Lee was her #1 choice in this regard.

“I am not sure if you consider Ang Lee Chinese, he’s Taiwanese but he does many Chinese-language films with many Chinese artists and actors, and I think his works and the actors in his films are the ones I am most familiar with and very fond of,” she said.

She furthermore mentioned the fact that the chap was more Taiwanese than Chinese but since he worked with many Chinese characters and actors, he was her choice. However, Angelina Jolie didn’t have her facts sorted out. Ang is in fact American although he is from Taiwan

After Jolie made the comment, Chinese cyberspace went into a chaotic loss of control as many online commentators posted vicious attacks on her for what they felt was an insult against Chinese sovereignty.

According to WSJ, "It’s not clear whether Ms. Jolie knew that she risked getting caught in the cross-Strait cross-fire, but her comments certainly set off a volley of scathing comments among Chinese Internet users, with some threatening to boycott her movies for, as one put it, “disrespecting China’s sovereignty.”"

“By implying that Taiwan and China are two separate countries, in a moment of excitement, a brilliant woman [Jolie] became a stupid laughingstock,” said one Chinese Weibo user.

China and Taiwan have been at loggerheads since a long time. And despite an occasional thawing in the tense relations, they haven’t ever seen eye to eye. Brad, her husband, too ended up on the Chinese hit list some years back with his movie which lauded Tibet which China does not consider a separate nation.

Angelina hasn’t spoken any words in return after the scandal. A Disney spokesperson has said that the remarks by Jolie were her personal affair and had no link with the opinions of the studio or movie franchise. “That was her own personal opinion,” he said.

However, not all is lost. Jolie has a lot of presence in the Far East and several people from Taiwan actually praised her profusely for being so candid.

“Her comment about Ang Lee being Taiwanese shows she fully deserves to be the Goodwill Ambassador for the UN. She is not afraid to tell the truth,” another Taiwanese woman wrote on her Facebook.

Many people in fact lauded her for her honesty and said that this was the very quality that made her the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations.
