Bill Murray practised Japanese pick-up lines in sushi bar

Feb 11 2014, 7:16am CST | by

Bill Murray learnt Japanese by practicing his pick-up lines in a sushi bar.

The 63-year-old actor decided to get into character during filming of Sofia Coppola's 2003 movie 'Lost In Translation' in Tokyo by buying a cheeky phrase book and testing his flirting skills on the local chef.

Speaking in a fan Q&A on Reddit, he said: "I would go to sushi bars with a book I had called 'Making out in Japanese'. It was a small paperback book, with questions like, 'Can we get into the back seat?' 'Do your parents know about me?' 'Do you have a curfew?'

"And I would say to the sushi chef, 'Do you have a curfew? Do your parents know about us? And can we get into the back seat?'

"And I would always have a lot of fun with that, but that one particular day, he said, 'Would you like some fresh eel?' and I said, 'Yes I would'. So he came back with a fresh eel, a live eel, and then he walked back behind a screen and came back in 10 seconds with a no-longer-alive eel."

The star also recalled the "real fiesta" he had filming 2009 stop-motion animation 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' with the likes of George Clooney and Meryl Streep, claiming the all-star cast once got so drunk they couldn't stay upright.

Bill said: "It was great fun, because it just dragged on and on and on. And it was this fun bunch of people. First we went to our friend's farm, and we all stayed at her place for a handful of days while we recorded during the day and then at night we would have these magnificent meals and we would all tell stories.

"We had a lot of great food, a lot of great wine and great stories. It went on until people started literally falling from their chairs and being taken away.

"And then we had to go to another place and do it again, we went to George's place, but then something happen[ed] and the whole party broke up, and George said, 'You don't have to go, do ya'and I didn't, so we just kicked around Northern Italy for a while. It was a real fiesta."

HBO's 'Olive Kitteridge' May Be The Best Depiction Of Marriage On TV

Nov 3 2014 1:22pm CST | Source: WNYC Music

Marriages, especially long ones, are among the most complex and misunderstood relationships regularly depicted on television. On the small screen, marriages are usually static things; they are good or bad and continue along in whatever way is needed to further the week's plotlines, from Bob and Carol Brady's upbeat union to Walt and Skyler White's perpetually doomed partnership. But marriage veterans know it's often a complicated, evolving thing, as two people negotiat ...

In The Life Of 'Olive Kitteridge,' It's The Little Things That Add Up

Oct 31 2014 1:32pm CDT | Source: WNYC Music

Olive Kitteridge, a new two-part, four-hour miniseries that runs on HBO Sunday and Monday, sounds like the kind of long-form dramas TV used to make back in the '70s and '80s when miniseries ruled. Like them, Olive Kitteridge covers an entire generation in the lives of its characters — a 25-year span — but otherwise, it couldn't be more different. Most of those sprawling classic miniseries were set against major historical events, and were as much about passionate romance and gla ...

Frances McDormand: Botox & plastic surgery erase the ‘roadmap’ of life

Oct 31 2014 6:15am CDT | Source: Celebitchy.com

Frances McDormand is still promoting her Olive Kitteridge mini-series that co-stars the awesome Bill Murray. This is the first press tour Frances has done in 10 years, which I didn’t realize until now. Frances tells Katie Couric how she avoided promoting her work to protect her privacy. She’s been watching Hollywood from afar, and she doesn’t like what she sees. The main topic of this interview is aging in Hollywood. This is a follow up to Frances’ recent admission of fear and rage over plasti ...

'Before I Go To Sleep' Is An Amnesia Thriller You'll Hope To Forget

Oct 31 2014 5:03am CDT | Source: WNYC Music

The bloodshot eyeball that opens to greet a brand-new day — and I mean brand-new day — in the thriller Before I Go To Sleep belongs to wealthy English homemaker Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman). Christine suffers from psychogenic amnesia, the fright-moviemaker's best friend. She can store memories during the day, but they reliably vanish overnight, marooning poor Christine in what is either a hapless attempt to upstage Mement ...

Chris Evans blames ‘irresponsible journalism’ for his retirement story

Oct 29 2014 8:40am CDT | Source: Celebitchy.com

This post was supposed to be a simple one about our favorite Dorito. Starting with Chris Evans’ visit to China last Friday. He played in a celebrity golf tournament. There are revealing GIFs of Chris taking a swing and staring off across the green. The ball was sitting right in front of him. So much second-hand embarrassment, but it was charming. Not everyone can be Bill Murray when it comes to golf. Thing ...
