Moby was drinking 60 units of alcohol each week

Sep 27 2013, 11:30am CDT | by Bang Showbiz

Moby was drinking 60 units of alcohol a week a few years ago.

The 48-year-old musician realised he was consuming almost triple the recommended amount for men - which is 21 units a week - when he was filling out a survey for a study at Columbia University, New York City, and knew he had to cut down his heavy drinking lifestyle.

In an interview with The Guardian newspaper: "Before doing the study I was given a questionnaire, and one of the questions was: how many units of alcohol do you consume in a month? And I realised I was drinking about 60 units a week."

Moby - real name Richard Melville Hall - felt embarrassed and didn't want to confess how much he was actually drinking during a doctor's consultation.

The now teetotal star explained: "I remember lying to my doctor, saying it was somewhere between 30 to 40 and he was even concerned at that. I was having about 300 drinks a month. That made me realize it was maybe time to stop."

Luckily, Moby - who has been open about his drug experimentation - didn't spend a lot of his fortune on booze and is glad alcohol isn't as expensive as cocaine.

Quizzed on whether he drank his money away, Moby - whose 1999 album 'Play' sold over 12 million copies worldwide -quipped: "I love drugs as well, but the good thing about alcohol is, it's not very expensive. If you're going to have a crazy night on cocaine, it's going to cost a lot of money. But a crazy night drinking lager costs, like, $30."

First Listen: The Flaming Lips, 'With A Little Help From My Fwends'

Oct 19 2014 10:02pm CDT | Source: WNYC Music

It's hard to divine, on paper anyway, a formula for effectively covering The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety. It's not an album that had been crying out for improvement — to put it mildly — nor has it ever receded far enough toward the cultural margins to require rediscovery. These songs still occupy the ether of the everyday, even for those who've never sat down and studied the record from front to back. Enter The Flaming Lips, whose mem ...

In Conversation: Leftfield

Neil Barnes on the new electro landscape…The musical landscape of the mid-1990s wasn’t so different from today, in so much as the singles chart was a mix of pop, rock and dance music, mainly. The dominant genres of that time have remained so through to now. What was different, or at least what felt different to someone buying records at the time, was that albums didn’t tend to be made by dance acts – at least not to the critically celebrated standards that ...

'The Equalizer' Pits Mallet Against Man And Man Against Corkscrew

"A feud is this way," Mark Twain wrote in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. "A man has a quarrel with another man and kills him; then that other man's brother kills him; then the other brothers, on both sides, goes for one another; then the cousins chip in — and by and by everybody's killed off, and there ain't no more feud. But it's kind of slow, and takes a long time." That's a different Twain quote from the one th ...
