Matt Smith: 'Peter Capaldi is the perfect choice for Doctor Who'

Aug 4 2013, 3:30pm CDT | by Bang Showbiz

Matt Smith says Peter Capaldi is the perfect choice to take over as Doctor Who.

The 55-year-old actor was revealed as the Twelfth Doctor during a BBC One special 'Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor' on Sunday (08.04.13) and Matt, who will bow out of the show in this year's Christmas special, couldn't be happier about his successor.

He said: "If I had to pick someone I'd pick him. Because I think he's great. Weirdly enough after 'The Eleventh Hour' [Matt's debut as The Doctor] he came up to me in the street and said, 'Mate well done. I watched your episode last night it was brilliant, I think you're really good.' I needed that, I needed a boost and I never forgot it.

"I've loved it, I really have, but when you've got to go, you've got to go. There was a backlash when I was cast. I was 26 and I was unknown.

"I just want to wish my successor all the best and, just say good luck and good on you for getting it. I know he's a both a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. The casting of it made me really excited, as a fan I think it's a really canny choice, I think he'll be a hit. Good luck man it's going to be a thrill."

Meanwhile, Peter - a lifelong fan of the show, who wrote a letter to Radio Times, at the age of 15, asking them to publish another special to celebrate "25 years of wandering in time with the Doctor" - is thrilled he no longer has to keep the news a secret.

The 'Thick Of It' actor - who starred in a 2008 episode of 'Doctor Who', playing Caecilius in 'Fires of Pompeii' opposite Tenth Doctor David Tennant - said: "It's so wonderful not to keep the secret any longer, but it has been absolutely fantastic in its own way.

"So many wonderful things have happened, for a while I couldn't tell my daughter who kept looking on the Internet and discovering that people were saying, 'so and so should be Doctor Who'. She was getting rather upset that it never mentioned me. I said to her, 'Just rise above it darling.' "

Doctor Who is lightening things up — barely. The Time Lord (Peter Capaldi) travels to the 12th century in Saturday's episode, "Robot of Sherwood," where he comes face to face with Robin Hood (Da Vinci's Demons' Tom Riley), one of Clara's (Jenna Coleman) childhood heroes. The hourlong episode, penned by writer Mark Gatiss, showcases Capaldi's 12th Doctor in a more comedic light — a 180 from h ...

Deep breath, 'Doctor Who' fans, Peter Capaldi up for adventure / The Premiere Watching Post

Aug 23 2014 1:21pm CDT | Source: Oh No They Didn't!

When Steven Moffat titles an episode "Deep Breath," he isn't kidding. For a program known for its harum-scarum pace and keep-up-or-shut-up iconography, the Season 8 Saturday premiere of BBC America's "Doctor Who" opens slowly — even with the T. rex — and radiates a newly modern self-consciousness, albeit dressed in Victorian garb. And for fans wondering how the series will accommodate the Doctor's regeneration from 31-year-old Matt Smith to 56-year-old ...

The Doctor Is In (He’s Aged)

Aug 21 2014 4:54pm CDT | Source: Oh No They Didn't!

THE passage of time is perhaps not so acute to the centuries-old alien at the heart of the BBC’s “Doctor Who,” the shape-shifting hero known simply as the Doctor, who has had more than 50 years of adventures across dimensions known and otherwise. But time and its measurement have become especially crucial to Peter Capaldi, who will make his proper, full-length debut as the latest actor to play the Doctor when the new season of “Doctor Who” has its premiere Saturday on BBC America. It h ...

TV Guide Interviews Peter Capaldi + Doctor Who makes the cover

Aug 19 2014 10:19pm CDT | Source: Oh No They Didn't!

Peter Capaldi remembers the car that came to his London home last August to drive him to the live TV special that revealed him to be Doctor Who's newest star. Because it only took him to a parking lot. "Like in a cheap British spy movie, I was dropped off and told to wait for another car to pick me up," says the actor, whose first full episode in the title role is the Season 8 premiere, airing August 23. ...

Thanks Malcolm Tucker, for the new Doctor

Aug 18 2014 4:06pm CDT | Source: Oh No They Didn't!

Last summer, Matt Smith announced that that he was leaving the lead role of the enigmatic time-and-space adventurer known as the Doctor, and the BBC said that he would be succeeded by Peter Capaldi, ...
